How Inspirational Quotes Can Help Your Career - The Muse

How Inspirational Quotes Can Help Your Career - The MuseHow Inspirational Quotes Can Help Your CareerInspirational prozentzahls are great. Who doesnt feel more motivated after reading, If the wind doesnt serve, take to the oars, or Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it? But Ive leidiced one of two things happens after I read an inspirational quote Either I promptly forget about it, or I repeat it so often it loses all of its meaning. For example, whenever something bad happened, I used to tell myself, Its all okay in the end. If its not okay, its not the end. When I first heard this, I found comfort in remembering all the times Id experienced total disasters that eventually worked out. However, after years of thinking, Its all okay in the end, it had become an automatic, rote response that didnt mean anything.Contrastingly, when I read Be the change you want to see in the world, I thought, Thats great Im going to be the change- and promptly forgot about it. I didnt do anything differently, and there was no point. Then, I got an idea. Id zupflmmel one inspirational quote and live by that quote- for one week. After the seven days was up, Id choose a new quote. Focusing on one mantra at a time would give me focus, and Id switch often enough that theyd maintain their impact. For my first week, I went with the Latin proverb, Be a fountain, not a drain. Basically, Id enrich others lives by being happy or cheerful or helpful, rather than deplete them with pettiness, cruelty, or apathy. Mastering the balance between my selfish and selfless tendencies is always a challenge- but I found having this proverb constantly running through my mind made a difference. When a woman who works for an online professional profile site emailed me and asked if we could talk about my career path as a writer, I was tempted to say no. After all, the idea of giving up a half hour during an insanely busy time for no clear reward wasnt appealing. (Im not proud) Then I rememb ered I was supposed to be fountain-ing, so I said yes. To be completely transparent, something beneficial did come out of it The woman offered to feature me on the sites blog, which may help me score more writing gigs. The mantra worked for smaller things, too, like not complaining to my co-workers about the dirty dishes left in the sink or deciding to pick up flowers for someone I knew had been super stressed. Then, just as I was getting used to thinking about fountains versus drains, the week was up and it was time to pick a new quote. I decided to go with Wayne Gretzskys You miss 100% of the shots you dont take. This quote inspired me to do something Id been debating about for a while- ask for a raise from one of the publications to which I contribute. I definitely felt the pieces Id submitted had gotten much stronger over time and therefore merited higher compensation. However, I needed Gretzskys wisdom for that final motivation to ask. And- I didnt get the raise. Not because I did nt deserve more money, my editor said, but because there just wasnt room in the budget. However, he promised wed talk again in five or six weeks. In the spirit of taking more shots, I also applied to several internship positions that sounded amazing but that I wasnt fully qualified for and invited a professional to coffee. Ive gotten to the second rounds of the internships, and the coffee meetup was great. The woman works at a local company Im interested in, and our conversation helped me get a better feel for its values and vibe. If I decide to apply for a job there after graduation, that knowledge will definitely come in handy.Over the next weeks, I lived according to By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail (I tried to be hyper-organized), There is always room at the top, (I tried to focus on collaboration, not competition), and The most effective way to do it, is to do it (I tried to put the kibosh on procrastination). Each quote helped me zero in one specific facet of my work life- yet I noticed even after moving on from a philosophy, its effects would linger. When I have the opportunity to help someone, even though if wont help me, Im more likely to say yes because I was so happy Id helped that woman during my fountain week. I developed some great organization techniques from my preparing to fail week. Ive started responding to emails right after I read them, thanks to my just do it week. Its been a great exercise, and Im feeling plenty inspired. If you want to follow my lead, check out my most successful strategiesWrite the quote in your weekly planner, so you see it every time you look at your schedule.Stick a Post-it note of the quote on your desk or mirror, which is great for starting and ending the day with a reminder.Take a little extra time to pick quotes that really resonate with you and are broad enough to apply to various situations. These 50 career quotes are perfect for starting your challenge. Bonus Theyre pretty enough to use as your phone background (another great way to have a constant reminder of your mantra for the week). Please tweet at me if you decide to try the exercise. Id love to hear what quotes you use and the results you getPhoto of inspirational quote courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Get Referrals in Sales

How to Get Referrals in SalesHow to Get Referrals in SalesReferrals- otherwise known as getting someone you know to give you warm leads to new prospects- are valuable for salespeople in all industries. Data from Nielsen shows that a salesperson is four times mora likely to close a sale to a referred lead as opposed to a cold lead. That means you can generate four times as many sales if you focus on getting referrals than if you spent that time cold calling. Thats a huge opportunity to increase sales (and do less cold calling). Fortunately, there are opportunities for referrals all around you. Existing Customers Your own customers are the easiest and friendliest referral source. In fact, if you treat them right, they may well go out and do some selling for you. Thats when you get those wonderful windfall calls from someones co-worker or uncle saying, I hear you sell the best widgets in town. Id like to buy 40 of them. Dont wait for your customers to do all the work for you- pick u p the phone and ask for the referral, or send them a referral request letter. Its a good idea anyway to check in with your customers a few weeks or months after the sale. You can ask them how theyre enjoying the product, find out if they have any questions, and then pop the question Who else do you know who can benefit from this product, as you have? According to Nielsen, 92 percent of consumers trust referrals from people they know. New Customers Just after youve closed a sale with someone is the best time to get referrals from them because theyre excited about their new purchase. Some salespeople are nervous about asking for referrals at this point because they just want to get out of there in case the prospect changes their mind. Unless youve used high-pressure tactics to intimidate someone into buying (dont do this) your new customer is probably thrilled and enthusiastic. Hit them up for a referral right away, while their energy and excitement is at its peak. Word-of-mouth r eferrals are the main driving factor behind 20 to 50 percent of all purchasing decisions, according to McKinsey Company. Prospects You Couldnt Close If you pitch a prospect and they turn you down, dont just bolt out the door. Get a referral or two, and youll have changed a loss into a win. You may be shaking your head and thinking, Thats crazy-talk. Why would a person who wouldnt even buy from me give me referrals? A lot of sales fall through not because the prospect dislikes you or your product, but because they just arent a good fit. In that case, its the perfect opportunity to find out if they know someone who is a good fit. Dont assume the prospect doesnt like you and your product. You have nothing to lose by asking. Seventy-seven percent of consumers are more likely to buy a new product after learning about it from a friend or family member, according to Nielsen. Everyone Else Literally, anyone you meet under any circumstances can give you a referral. After all, the av erage person knows in excess of 250 other people. Do you really think that none of those hundreds of people are a good fit for your products? Ask everyone- your dry-cleaner, your accountant, your neighbor, even the person standing behind you in the supermarket checkout. Youll be amazed at how many leads will drop into your lap as a result of a brief conversation.

How certain beliefs can affect your career negatively

How certain beliefs can affect yur career negativelyHow certain beliefs can affect your career negativelyAs children we adopt a belief ordnungsprinzip based on the belief system of our parents. Depending on the parenting style, we are likely rewarded and reinforced for doing what these teachers think is good. We are criticized and penalized for what is bad. It is how we learn to stay safe. It is how we fit in.Negative feedback can be helpful in an urgent situation such as a hot stove. Not so much when it comes to development, leaving us feeling as if we dont belong unless we are good.As adults we live out this belief system and learned perspectives. When life sends us a difficult situation often we internalize this as having been bad and deserving of this hardship. Must be something wrong with me.Beliefs translate to behaviors. If we grew up around anxiety well likely address discord with it. If we grew up around positivity well find the good. Often negative life messages are merely assumptions but we are conditioned to adopt them as true in an attempt to keep us safe.Careers are difficult to maneuver when we allow our learned beliefs to drive our actions. We play it safe, not applying for stretch jobs because we dont want to feel rejected. We fear we wont fit in and internalize not being good enough, resulting in distant behavior which only compounds disconnectedness. Anxiety leads to losing our executive presence because we cant manage our fears in the moment fears based in a belief system that isnt authentic but learned. When we can untangle the difference between assumptions and truth we have power. We can observe our behavior and feelings from a third-party perspective and write a different ending to our story instead of fast forwarding and anticipating a doom-and-gloom ending. We can adopt our OWN belief system by writing down our values and weighing our perspectives against them when seeking clarity. Not defaulting to a learned belief system. What do you truly believe is important in life? And how do you want to live to that standard? If you know the answer, your character will be evident and your behavior will be consistent. If not, your colleagues and clients are unclear as well.MaryLeeGannon, ACC, CAE is an executive coach and corporate CEO who helps busy leaders get off the treadmill to nowhere to be more effective, earn more, bemore calm and enjoyconnected relationships with the people who matter while it still matters.Watch her FREE Master Class training on Three Things to Transform Your Life and Career Right Now atwww.MaryLeeGannon.com.

This is doubly true in high-volume hiring events, where your recruiters will have to compete directly with other organizations for candidate attention. To make aya your recruiters land top talent at the next high-volume hiring event, follow these steps1. Prepare the TeamMake sure your recruiters are on the same pageregarding the companys goals with respect to the event. What kind of roles need filling? What kind of candidates should the recruiters look for? How many candidates should they try to reach? All of these questions need to be answered before the event. The event sponsors may provide you with tools for tracking and engaging event attendees. If so, recruiters should take time ahead of the event to learn how to use th ese tools. You may also want to consider investing in your own event management technology so that recruiters will have the right tools no matter what event they attend.2. Identify Your MetricsYour recruiters should have a strategy before heading into the event. To help execute this strategy, theyll need to be tracking the right metrics. Work with your team to determine which metrics are most relevant and how to track those metrics.Need help identifying the right metrics? Consider the following questionsWhat is your strategic goal? Do you want to reduce sourcing time? Hire X number of people? What is your execution strategy? Retooling an Automotive Resume to Show Transferable Skills

Retooling an Automotive Resume to Show Transferable SkillsRetooling an Automotive Resume to Show Transferable SkillsKaren Caswelch had worked at a General Motors subsidiary for 20 years. Her new resume opens new routes for zu sich talents.Karen Caswelch had been working for the same company for 20 years when she decided, in April 2008, to take some time off and reassess zu sich career after her company welches sold to a private equity firm. She had been working at Allison Transmission, an Indianapolis company that had been owned by General Motors for the past seven years, she worked as vice president of purchasing. Once the company welches sold, I decided it was time to take a step back, spend some time with my family, she said. Even before I left, I had people at other companies telling me, Call me when youre ready. We want to hire you. By October, when she was ready, she contacted her network. I was talking to a COO, very high up in a $13 billion company, and right as they were read y to hire, they had a hiring freeze, the OpsLadder member recalled. At that point, holey moley, what do you do?It wasnt my resume that got me into talk to them because I knew them, Caswelch said. Up to that point, I hadnt had to worry about what my resume looked like. I needed to start thinking about rewriting my resume. It was 20 years out of date.Caswelch, who does bedrngnislage shy away from a challenge, did what she would normally do when faced with a problem She took charge. I was going to rewrite it myself, she said. I went online to look for good resumes and use them as a model for my own rewrite. It didnt take long for her to admit that wasnt the solution. It was a total disaster, she admitted. Im not a professional. In her online search for resumes, she came across the resume service at Ladders. She sent her resume to the writers for a critique. The note she received from one of the writers warned Caswelch she was going to be tough on her. Im an executive. I can handle tough , and I needed the truth, Caswelch said. Everything that writer said about my resume expressed the concerns I had with it. Everything they said was exactly right. One of the things that really resonated with me when the resume writer said of my original resume, This is a resume for someone with little experience. It doesnt capture the value of what you can bring to an organization. Youve done so many things, your resume doesnt capture it.So Caswelch and the resume writer got to work finding what it was in her background that would that would make that value pop on the page.Opening up optionsAt the same time Caswelch was rewriting her resume, she was speaking to her network about her job search. During a lunch meeting, a friend who works in the health care industry recounted a bad purchasing decision by her company. Caswelch recognized that she could have solved the problem better, and it occurred to her that her search might be too focused on her current vertical.I realized, Wow, my skills really are transferrable, she said. I can branch out of heavy manufacturing. It became a matter of looking not at what I had done, but what my skill sets are.The resume writer and Caswelch talked about her transferrable skills and how to present them. I hadnt thought about this when I left Allison, she said. It was a completely new way to present myself. As I went back and forth with the writer, we talked about my skill set and what other industries could use my skill set. We worked on a resume that captures the fact that I have a skill set that is transferrable across other industries. The value of performance reviewsIt was a lot of work to go back 10 to 15 years and then pull out what your top five or six accomplishments were, Caswelch said. It was probably 20 to 40 hours of work on my part, really trying to determine my major accomplishments. One lesson I learned Keep your performance reviews. When you go to update your resume, there will be a lot of information in there t hat can help you describe what you did and the success you brought to the company.Caswelch said the whole process took about a month, in part because she worked methodically and meticulously on it. The writer had turned around a resume in two or three days, and then Id work on it for two or three hours at a time, kept coming back to it, re-reading it, making sure that I was comfortable with the information that I sent her. I spent a lot of time making sure that she had really had good stuff going in.We went back and forth a couple of times. When she gave the finished product to me, I put it away for a week or so, then went back to it and changed just two or three statements.Next step looking for a job. Which isnt so easy in Indianapolis right now, said Caswelch. Right now, the economy is mediocre we have a lot of foreclosures, even in an affordable housing market. There are not a lot of company headquarters thats part of the complexity. While she has spoken to her husband about the p ossibility of relocating, with a daughter about to enter her junior year of high school, its not something shes ready to do right now. While she waits out the tough job market and toys with the idea of relocation, she continues to add to her skill set. She is volunteering at a private school, which her children attend, as the chief marketing officer.Ive spent most of my career in manufacturing this is a chance to learn marketing, Caswelch said. The school is re-branding itself. One of the parents on the board, a marketing professional, worked up a complete marketing plan. I am working with an ad agency to come up with a new tag line, an admissions campaign, a new Web site and more. For now, she said, she is going to consider herself a work in progress, as well as her resume. I took a step back, and Im not going to stress, she said. Right now, the school needs me, so I will focus on doing this work at the school. I havent updated my resume with this new assignment. My next step is to go back to Ladders and add this latest work to my resume.

Point taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographic

Point taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographicPoint taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographicA colleague mentioned the fact that he received two nearly identical emails last week. Both had the exact same information, timeline and takeaways. He read through both, but when it came to remembering the point of each, one stood out mora than the other the one with a simple but extremely easy to understand infographic. While human beings cant be infographics, cutting down on conversational clutter can make people more inclined to listen to what you say. In other words, trying to keep yur messaging and presentations as clear and on point as those handy dandy chart and info hybrids can make people pay more attention to you and your messaging.1. Take it easyOne of the joys of a well-designed infographic is the fact that while there may be a lot of information to digest, there arent necessarily that many words. Keep the information easy to understand and retain.2. Know yo ur target audienceAn image of a juicy hamburger definitely wouldnt work when pitching a group of vegans, so why take a chance on alienating the people youre trying to impress? Take a moment to figure out your audience before launching into a pitch or request. Try to tailor your request so that its personalized to the person or group on the receiving end.3. Know your statsThe strength of many infographics is the seemingly effortless presentation a lot of dense information, usually statistics. If youre going to quote specifics to strengthen an argument, make sure you know what youre talking about. Research facts, figures and statistics in advance and only use them sparingly and effectively.4. Embrace visuals when possibleWe all know that a picture is worth a thousand words, but unless you plan on walking around with a sandwich board, it can be hard to emulate an actual infographic. Instead, if youre planning on giving a pitch or informal presentation try to have at least one visual cu e or anchor for people to focus on. It will also take some of the pressure off while youre speaking.5. Keep it manageableOne of the joys of infographics is the fact that theres a lot of really juicy information contained in a single series of connected images. Wait until a full-fledged meeting to share all your most brilliant ideas, but in the initial stages stick to the most important points.6. Tweet TweetTwitter can be an interesting place to find out updates and informationmore so since users are limited to 140 characters per update. If youre struggling with a complicated idea, try to imagine how you might tweet it out and then finesse the grammar, before sharing with others.7. Add some white spaceWhen you have big ideas, you sometimes want to include all of them, even if there isnt quite room for everything. Think about the most bold and eye-catching infographic theres usually white space which allows you to absorb the main ideas instead of feeling overwhelmed by them. Try to re member to leave blank spaces in your messaging as well, to give people the ability to simply accept and retain your ideas.8. Stay in touchOne of the biggest frustrations of our sometimes confusingly connected lives is the fact that it can feel impossible to simply and immediately connect with someone. Infographics are awesome because they tend to include only the most important way to create with their creators. The next time you meet someone new think about the way you most want to connect with them and share only that bit of contact information. People can get so bogged down with communication methods that they forget to connect.
